How to Rotate PDF Pages: Fix Sideways and Upside-Down Scans for Good

2026-11-05来源 dev.to BeginnersEnglish

You scan a stack of invoices, a signed agreement or a set of class notes, open the PDF, and page 3 is lying on its side while page 7 is upside down. You can turn it in your viewer, but the next person who opens the file sees the same mess. Clients notice it, examiners notice it, and marketplace or portal reviewers notice it.

The fix is to change the rotation saved inside the PDF itself. This guide shows how to do that with the free Rotate PDF tool, how to rotate only the pages that need it, and the mistakes that leave people with a file that is still wrong.

Why pages end up sideways

Most crooked PDFs come from the same few places:

  • Phone scanning apps that guess the orientation from how you held the phone.
  • Flatbed or office scanners where a few sheets went in the wrong way round.
  • Mixed documents, such as a portrait report with one landscape chart or table in the middle.
  • Merged files, where each source PDF had its own orientation.

In every case, the content is fine. Only the direction it faces is wrong, so you do not need to re-scan anything.

What the tool actually does

A PDF page carries a rotation setting, which tells any viewer how to turn the page before it shows it. The Rotate PDF tool changes that setting. It does not redraw or recompress the page, so text, images and signatures keep their original quality and the file size stays about the same.

You get three choices of turn:

  • 90° clockwise
  • 180° (for upside-down pages)
  • 90° anticlockwise

And two choices of which pages to turn:

  • All pages
  • Selected pages, where you type the page numbers

The new rotation is added to whatever rotation the page already had. So if a page was already set to 90° and you rotate it 90° clockwise again, it ends up at 180°. That matters when you run the tool twice on the same file (more on that below).

Step by step: rotate every page

Use this when the whole document came out the same wrong way, which is common when a full batch went through the scanner sideways.

  1. Open Rotate PDF and add your PDF.
  2. Under Rotation, choose the turn you need. If the top of the text points left, choose 90° clockwise. If it points right, choose 90° anticlockwise. If the page is upside down, choose 180°.
  3. Leave Pages set to All pages.
  4. Click Rotate PDF.
  5. Download the result. It is saved with -rotated added to the original name, for example invoice-march-rotated.pdf, so your original file is not overwritten.

Once it finishes, the tool shows a short note such as "12 of 12 pages rotated", so you can confirm it did what you expected.

Step by step: rotate only some pages

This is the more common case: a document that is mostly fine with a few problem pages.

  1. Add the PDF to Rotate PDF.
  2. Choose the Rotation.
  3. Set Pages to Selected pages. A Pages to rotate box appears.
  4. Type the pages, for example 2, 5-7.
  5. Click Rotate PDF and download the file.

The page box accepts a few formats:

  • A single page: 4
  • A range: 2-6 (you can also write 2 to 6)
  • An open-ended range that runs to the last page: 9-
  • Several of these together, separated by commas or semicolons: 1, 3-5, 9-

If you type a page number beyond the end of the document, the tool tells you how many pages the file actually has. If you write a range backwards, like 7-3, it asks you to put the smaller number first. Nothing gets saved until the list is valid.

When pages need different turns

One pass applies one rotation. If page 2 needs 90° clockwise and page 8 is upside down, do it in two passes:

  1. Rotate page 2 by 90° clockwise and download the file.
  2. Add that downloaded file, rotate page 8 by 180°, and download again.

Because each pass only touches the pages you list, the first fix stays as it is.

Practical uses

Small business owners. Before you email a scanned quotation, purchase order or signed contract, open it and check every page. Rotating the two crooked pages takes less time than explaining them to a client.

Students. Handwritten assignments photographed on a phone often come out in mixed orientations. Fix them before you upload to a college portal, where you may not get a second chance to submit.

Sellers and resellers. Product manuals, warranty cards and certificates you attach to listings or send to buyers look more trustworthy when every page reads the right way up.

Office records. If you keep scanned bills and statements for accounts or GST filing, fixing orientation once means you never have to turn pages again every time you search the archive.

Tips for a clean result

  • Scroll through the whole file first. Write down the page numbers that are wrong and which way each one faces. That way one or two passes are enough.
  • Group pages by the turn they need. Put all the "needs 90° clockwise" pages in one list, such as 2, 5-7, 11, and the upside-down ones in another.
  • Check the result before you send it. Open the downloaded file and look at the pages you changed.
  • Combine with related tools. If the file also has blank or duplicate pages, use the PDF Page Extractor to keep only the pages you want, in the order you want. If your scan came out as several separate PDFs, rotate each one and then join them with Merge PDF.

Common mistakes

Rotating the already-fixed file again by accident. Rotation is added to the page's current setting. If you upload the -rotated file and rotate all pages 90° once more, pages that were correct will now be wrong. Keep track of which file you are working on.

Choosing the wrong direction. It is easy to mix up clockwise and anticlockwise. If the result is upside down, rotate those same pages by 180° and it will be correct.

Using "All pages" on a mixed document. If only the landscape chart on page 6 is sideways, rotating everything will break the other pages. Switch to Selected pages.

Counting pages from the printed page numbers. The tool counts the pages in the file, starting from 1. If your document has a cover and contents pages, the number printed at the bottom of a page may not match its position in the PDF. Use your viewer's page counter instead.

Expecting it to straighten a slightly tilted scan. The tool turns pages by quarter and half turns only. A page scanned at a small angle stays at that angle.

Uploading a password-protected PDF. Locked PDFs need to be unlocked before you can rotate them.

Quick checklist

  • Open the PDF and note which pages are wrong and which way they face.
  • One wrong direction for the whole file: choose the rotation and All pages.
  • A few wrong pages: choose Selected pages and type them, like 2, 5-7.
  • Different turns needed: do one pass per direction, using the downloaded file each time.
  • Open the -rotated file and check it before you send it.

Wrapping up

Sideways pages are a small problem, but they make a document look careless and slow down whoever has to read it. Fixing the rotation inside the file means it opens the right way in every viewer, for everyone, without changing the quality of the content.
