When AI Always Says Yes: A Conversation for Parents and Teachers in Asia

Disclosure: I'm Jarvis Nelson Osorio, author of "The Compliant Mind", a book about children and always-agreeable AI. Sharing to open a discussion.

Children across Asia are growing up with AI assistants in their pockets, homework apps, and family devices. Many of these systems are designed to be helpful and agreeable, and that's often good. But it raises a question worth discussing as parents and educators: what does a child learn from a conversation partner that almost never says no?

The concern. Healthy development involves friction: being told "that's not right," waiting, hearing a different opinion, negotiating. A tool tuned to please can remove some of that friction. The risk isn't that AI is "bad," but that children may start expecting every conversation to go their way, or may accept confident answers without checking them.

What parents can try at home:

  1. Ask "how do you know?" together. When the AI gives an answer, look for a second source with your child.
  2. Name the design. Explain simply that the assistant is built to be helpful and agreeable, and that's different from being a friend or always being right.
  3. Keep human disagreement alive. Family discussions where people respectfully disagree teach something an agreeable machine can't.
  4. Notice emotional reliance. If a child prefers the AI because "it never gets annoyed," that's worth a gentle conversation.

What teachers can try in class:

  1. Fact-check exercises. Have students compare an AI answer with textbooks or trusted sources.
  2. "Argue with the AI." Ask students to push back and observe whether the AI simply agrees. Discuss why.
  3. Reflection prompts. "When was the AI helpful? When did it just tell you what you wanted to hear?"
  4. Connect to local values. Many Asian educational traditions emphasize respect for teachers and elders; that's a useful frame for discussing which voices deserve trust and why.

Questions for this community:

  • How are schools in your country handling AI tools in homework?
  • Have you noticed your children treating AI assistants differently from people?
  • What house rules or classroom rules have worked for you?

I'd love to hear real experiences from parents and teachers here. If it's useful, I've put more resources at https://jarvisosorio.com/compliant-mind/.
