Wabi Not for You? Pick the Right Alternative by What You Actually Need
I'm the author of Wabi Wiki, an unofficial guide to the Wabi AI assistant — not affiliated with Wabi or Replika. This post is a rewritten version of our alternatives guide, written for Dev.to.
Wabi is a multiplayer personal AI assistant that builds mini-apps inside your chats — genuinely different from anything else out there. But different isn't the same as right for you. It launched publicly on October 19, 2026, it's free and English-first, and it runs on iPhone, Android and Mac only. If any of that rules it out for you, here's the honest map of where to look instead, sorted by the need Wabi doesn't meet.
If you live on Windows
As of October 2026 there is no Windows app and no web version of Wabi, and none has been announced. If your day happens on a Windows PC, the practical answer today is a mainstream assistant in the browser — ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. You lose the multiplayer threads and the auto-built mini-apps, which are the whole reason Wabi is interesting. You gain an assistant that actually runs on the machine in front of you. If those group mini-apps are the point, run Wabi on your phone and treat the PC as a spectator for now.
If you wanted a companion, not a helper
Wabi is built to get things done, not to be your friend. If what you actually want is one-on-one conversation and emotional companionship, look at AI companion apps — Replika first, since it comes from Wabi's own founder. Expect freemium: the chat is free, the deeper relationship features sit behind a subscription. Our Wabi Wiki comparison of the two lays out which job each one is actually built for.
If your work can't wait for a new app to mature
Wabi is days old and its maker openly says the business model isn't decided yet. Fun for a side experiment; risky as the backbone of a critical workflow. If AI is load-bearing in your job today, pick an established assistant or productivity tool with a paid plan and a track record as your primary — and let Wabi earn its way in over time.
If you just need the group organised
Sometimes the honest answer is that you don't need an AI at all. A shared calendar, a shared list and a group chat handle coordination without connecting anyone's bank account to anything. Wabi's edge is doing the legwork for the group. If you don't need the legwork done, the simple tools win on trust and cost.
Quick picker
- Windows or web access today → mainstream assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) in a browser. Trade-off: no multiplayer threads or mini-apps.
- Companionship and conversation → AI companion apps such as Replika. Trade-off: subscription paywalls, no task legwork.
- Stable, proven tool for work → established paid AI/productivity tools. Trade-off: less novel, costs money from day one.
- Just organise the group → shared calendars, lists and notes. Trade-off: you do the legwork yourself.
