When you write German text for the web, the same letter needs three different codes depending on where it goes. Here is a short, practical reference, with a free tool at the end for copying the characters directly.

The characters

Lowercase: ä, ö, ü. Uppercase: Ä, Ö, Ü. Plus ß.

Unicode

U+00E4, U+00F6, U+00FC, U+00C4, U+00D6, U+00DC, U+00DF.

Windows Alt codes

Alt+0228, Alt+0246, Alt+0252, Alt+0196, Alt+0214, Alt+0220, Alt+0223, using the numeric keypad with Num Lock on.

HTML entities

ä ö ü Ä Ö Ü ß

A faster copy route

If you only need a character once, this free umlaut tool puts them all on one page to click and copy, with the shortcut tables beside them: Umlaut Letters

It is made for German learners, writers and designers who do not want to switch keyboards for a single letter.
