RK3576 vs RK3568: Which Rockchip SoC Is Right For Your Embedded Edge Project?

2026-11-03来源 dev.to LinuxEnglish

If you are building industrial edge devices, digital signage, IoT gateways, or vision-based embedded systems, you’ve probably considered Rockchip’s popular RK3568 and its newer successor, the RK3576.

Both are widely used on system-on-modules (SoM) and single-board computers, but they target different performance brackets. Choosing the wrong chip can lead to over-budget BOM costs or insufficient AI horsepower for your inference workloads. Let’s break down their differences from a developer’s perspective.

Core Spec Comparison

CPU & GPU

  • RK3568: Quad-core Cortex-A55 @ 2.0GHz + Mali-G52 GPU. This is a mature, power-efficient chip built for stable 24/7 industrial operation. It handles lightweight UI rendering, simple display playback, and basic data processing very reliably.
  • RK3576: Octa-core CPU (4× Cortex‑A76 + 4× Cortex‑A55) paired with an upgraded GPU. The A76 cores deliver a big jump in general computing performance, which matters for complex HMI, multitasking,g and heavy Linux application stacks.

NPU (The biggest distinction for Edge AI)

This is the key metric for any computer vision project.

  • RK3568: 0.8 TOPS NPU. It works for small quantized models: barcode scanning, simple object detection, basic motion recognition, with 1 or 2 camera streams.
  • RK3576: 6 TOPS NPU. It can run larger vision models, handle simultaneous inference from multiple cameras, defect inspection algorithms, and high-frame-rate video analysis.

Both chips support Rockchip’s official RKNN toolkit for model conversion and deployment, so developers can reuse much of their existing RKNN workflow, though you must compile separate model binaries for each platform.

Video Codec

  • RK3568: 4K@60fps single-channel H.264 / H.265 decode. Perfect for single-screen players.
  • RK3576: Multi-channel 4K decoding and supports up to 8 K decoding. Great for multi-screen splicing, NVR boxes, and multi-camera edge aggregation hardware.

Power & Thermal

RK3568 runs cooler with lower power consumption, which makes it the default pick for fanless, space-constrained IoT gateways.
RK3576 delivers far more performance, so it requires better thermal design under sustained heavy AI load. Most industrial carrier boards and SoMs for RK3576 come with reinforced heat dissipation.

When should you pick RK3568?

Choose RK3568 if your project falls into these categories:

  • Low-cost IoT gateway or simple edge collector
  • Single-screen digital signage
  • Lightweight AI vision tasks with only 1–2 cameras
  • Fanless enclosure with strict power limits
  • Mass production that prioritizes a stable supply chain and mature software support

The RK3568 ecosystem is extremely mature. There are tons of community tutorials, pre-built Linux images, driver patches, and troubleshooting resources available online.

When should you pick RK3576?

Go for RK3576 when you need:

  • Multi-camera real-time edge AI vision inspection
  • High-performance HMI with complex graphical interfaces
  • Multi-channel 4K video decoding and multi-screen playback
  • Future-proof hardware that leaves performance headroom for model updates
  • Industrial vision quality-checking applications

Keep in mind that RK3576 is a newer platform. While the core SDK framework is familiar to RK3568 developers, some peripheral drivers are still being iterated. It is not a drop-in pin-to-pin replacement, so a full carrier board redesign is required if migrating from RK3568 SoM.

Final Thoughts

RK3568 remains an excellent, cost-effective workhorse for low and medium-load embedded applications.
RK3576 is the upgrade option built specifically for heavy edge AI workloads and high-performance multimedia use cases.

Before locking your BOM, map out your camera count, required AI inference FPS, display resolution, and power budget.
