More than half of developers are worried about their careers due to artificial intelligence
New research from Adaptavist explores developer sentiment around artificial intelligence, revealing that 54% of software developers feel anxious about their long-term career prospects.
The report highlights shifting workplace expectations, with 55% reporting pressure to work faster and 51% noting they now primarily manage AI outputs rather than write code.
Three in five developers say their employers expect them to do more with fewer resources simply because they have access to AI tools. At the same time, 55% of workers feel increased pressure to work faster. This has led 61% of respondents to say that the profession is changing too quickly, while almost half believe the job has become less attractive and 31% believe that these changes have negatively affected their career.
How has daily work changed?
Daily work has shifted from writing code to managing automated systems and controlling their results. More than half of survey participants say they now manage AI rather than just use it.
However, many employees are forced to use it mainly to show their managers that they are using it. One in two developers admits that they do it to prove their activity and not because it actually helps them. In fact, 37% fear that they risk losing their job if they refuse to adopt these tools. According to the survey, 58% state that the simple use of artificial intelligence has become a key evaluation indicator at work, while only 22% believe that usage levels are a valid measure of success.
Who is most affected
This pressure seems to affect developers with mid-career experience the most, who are more likely to see their career progression suffer. On the other hand, 43% of younger developers believe that AI has limited their opportunities to learn.
