I Built ScamPeek — A Free Windows Tool to Help People Spot Scam Warning Signs
Why I built ScamPeek
A familiar company name, an urgent email, or a convincing image can make it easy to act before looking closely. I built ScamPeek to give Windows users a practical way to pause and see what deserves another check.
What ScamPeek does
ScamPeek 1.0 is a free Windows assistant for examining suspicious URLs, complete email files, and images. It explains the warning signs it finds and which checks it performed.
URLs: inspect the destination host
Paste a URL or a message containing one. ScamPeek parses the link to show the actual destination host and highlights misleading structures and possible brand impersonation. Local parsing does not visit the website. If a system DNS check runs, the hostname goes to your DNS resolver.
Email: inspect the original message locally
Import a complete .eml file downloaded from Gmail or Outlook. ScamPeek reviews the sender, available headers, message body, and links for impersonation, pressure tactics, and other phishing indicators. The local check does not upload the email or open attachments.
Images: read text offline and inspect provenance
PaddleOCR runs locally to extract readable text, links, and possible warning terms from an image. You do not need a cloud AI account for OCR. Where an image has supported C2PA Content Credentials, ScamPeek shows the available provenance result and distinguishes record validity from signer trust. Having or lacking a record does not establish authenticity.
Optional online checks and AI follow-up
Google Web Risk is optional. It requires your own Google Cloud API key and an internet connection; Google charges may apply. An online lookup sends the URL to Google, so avoid sharing URLs that contain private tokens. Core local checks are available without a key.
ScamPeek can prepare a question for Gemini or Doubao. Review it, remove sensitive details, and copy, paste, and submit it yourself if you choose. ScamPeek does not automatically submit that content to an AI service. The app supports English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese, with region-specific resources and settings.
Limits and privacy
ScamPeek is not antivirus and cannot guarantee that a link, email, or image is safe. A warning is a reason to investigate, and the absence of a warning is not a clean bill of health. For suspicious requests involving money, accounts, or personal information, verify through an official channel you reach independently.
