How to make your own game mods with the help of artificial intelligence

My personal experience with Valheim
A creator has managed to create five different mods for the game Valheim, using only advanced AI models, such as Claude (Opus 5.5) and ChatGPT (GPT-6 Astra). These mods were created for specific purposes, such as making it easier to find merchants in the game world, adjusting the balance of certain mechanics, and better controlling the behavior of tamed animals.
How to use artificial intelligence for modding
The process doesn't require you to write any code, but rather to guide the tool properly. According to the creator, the best method is as follows:
- Create a plan: Ask the model to create a detailed plan for the change you want. It is essential to have the plan independently reviewed by the AI itself before implementation begins.
- Establishing rules: Give the tool clear instructions. For example, ask it not to make unnecessary calculations to avoid slowing down the game and not to change files without reading them first.
- Limitation of scale: AI models perform best with small, targeted interventions. Don't attempt large game expansions, as complexity increases the likelihood of errors.
The creator also warns that it is good to avoid using artificial intelligence to produce new graphical or artistic elements of the game, as ethical issues are raised, while the result often lacks aesthetic coherence.
Beyond the game
The use of artificial intelligence can also be extended to the very tools you use for programming. The creator himself has used AI to create plugins that enhance the Claude Code tool, adding systems to manage its usage and automatically improve the instructions it is given.
