How to generate sound effects for Godot with AI
The quickest way to get AI sound effects into a Godot game is to ask Ziva, an AI agent that works inside the Godot editor. Type something like "add jump, coin pickup and hurt sounds". Ziva generates up to 3 takes of each sound, you listen to them in the chat and pick one, and Ziva saves the MP3 to res://assets/generated/audio/ and adds the code that plays it in your game. Sounds can be 0.5 to 22 seconds long, and ambience such as rain or an engine hum can be made as a loop. Ziva makes sound effects, not music.
If you would rather generate sounds on a website and import them yourself, or you only need free retro sounds, another tool fits better. The table shows which.
Disclosure: Ziva.sh makes Ziva, and this is a repost of our guide. Facts about other tools come from their own pages, checked 4 November 2026.

Web generators make the sound and stop there; the Godot plugins also save it into your project. Ziva goes one step further: because it is an agent that edits your scenes and scripts, it also plays the sound at the right moment, such as when the player jumps or a button is pressed.
How to generate sound effects in Godot with Ziva
- Install Ziva in your Godot project and sign in.
- Ask in the chat for the sounds you need, for example "Add a jump sound, a coin pickup sound and a hurt sound. Make the coin bright and short." You can ask for up to 8 sounds at once.
- Approve the generation, unless auto-approve is on. Ziva describes each sound to the generator, with a length that fits: most effects 0.5-2 seconds, ambience 5-15.
- In the Pick your sounds card, play the takes for each sound and pick one, or type what to change ("lower and less springy") to get new takes.
- Ziva saves your picks to
res://assets/generated/audio/, for examplejump.mp3, and adds a line like this where the sound belongs:
ZivaSfx.play(self, preload("res://assets/generated/audio/jump.mp3")) ZivaSfx is a small helper Ziva adds to your project at addons/ziva_audio/ziva_sfx.gd. It plays each sound with a slight random pitch change, about 8%, so repeated jumps and hits don't sound identical. It uses an audio bus named SFX if you have one, and removes its player when the sound finishes.
Image and sound generation can be switched off under Settings → Agent → Image and Sound Generation Tools. Every take is generated, so takes you don't pick still count toward your usage. Steam asks you to disclose AI-generated sound that ships in your game.
Looping ambience: rain, wind, fire and engine hums
Ask for a looping sound, for example "rain on a window, 10 seconds, looping". Ziva asks the generator for a clip designed to repeat and saves it with Loop turned on in its import settings, so an AudioStreamPlayer with Autoplay keeps it going.
For a file from anywhere else, select it in the FileSystem dock, open the Import dock, tick Loop (Ogg Vorbis and MP3) or set Loop Mode to Forward (WAV), and click Reimport. Two common mistakes:
- Looping from the
finishedsignal. Godot doesn't emitfinishedfor looping audio, so use the import setting instead. - A clip with silence or a fade at either end. You will hear a gap at the loop point however you import it, so trim the clip in an audio editor such as Audacity first.
Ziva's loops are at most 22 seconds. For a long, varied bed, layer a steady loop with short one-shots, such as crackles over a fire loop, played at random intervals.
How to add sound effects in Godot 4 yourself
If you already have the file:
- Drag it into the FileSystem dock. Godot imports WAV, Ogg Vorbis and MP3. Its docs suggest WAV for short, repeated effects and Ogg Vorbis for music and long sounds.
- Add an
AudioStreamPlayerto the scene, orAudioStreamPlayer2D/AudioStreamPlayer3Dfor sound that comes from a position, and set Stream to the file. - Call
$JumpSound.play()from your jump code, or connect a button'spressedsignal to a function that plays it.
A sound stops when its node is freed, so a coin that calls queue_free() cuts off its own pickup sound. Play it from a node that stays loaded, such as an autoload, or add a temporary player under the scene tree's root (get_tree().root), which is what ZivaSfx does. To rotate between several takes of one sound, put them in an AudioStreamRandomizer; it picks one at random and can shift the pitch and volume.
What Ziva's sound effects don't do
- No music, speech or voice lines. Sound effects and ambience loops only.
- 0.5 to 22 seconds per sound.
- MP3 files only. Convert with Audacity if you need WAV or Ogg Vorbis.
- You keep one take per sound. The sound tool doesn't build an
AudioStreamRandomizerfrom the takes. - Godot only. Unity, Unreal and Isaac Sim are not supported.
- It needs a signed-in Ziva account and an internet connection.
When another tool is better
- Free retro sounds for a pixel-art game: ChipTone, jsfxr or the gdfxr addon.
- Common sounds such as UI clicks, footsteps and impacts at no cost: Kenney's CC0 packs or Freesound's CC0 filter.
- Background music: Sonilo or SFXMint, or a composer.
- Sounds for a project outside Godot, or files you want to keep in a separate library: ElevenLabs.
