Canonical updates Ubuntu for permanent time changes in 3 regions of Canada

2026-11-06来源 dev.to LinuxEnglish

Canonical has updated the system time zone database package, tzdata, across all supported Ubuntu releases.

The release integrates permanent time zone shifts for British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and Manitoba, alongside necessary updates for ICU tooling components on LTS editions.

Standard system updates deliver the package automatically.

British Columbia permanently switched to UTC−07 on March 9, 2026. The Northwest Territories switched to UTC−06 on August 21, 2026, and Manitoba switched to UTC−05 on October 31, 2026. In these territories, clocks will no longer be set back one hour in November.

Some tools require additional components to handle dates and times correctly. In Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later, these are provided as an additional package. In versions 20.04 and 22.04 LTS, they are included in the time component update.

Users don't need to do anything special beyond the usual system updates. The updates are being rolled out gradually and have reached most systems. Those using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS need the additional Extended Support service to receive them.
