Business Internet in the UAE: Committed Bandwidth vs 'Up to' Speeds
Most SMEs in the UAE think they bought committed bandwidth when they actually bought best-effort fibre with a business logo on the invoice. The two products share a sales conversation and nothing else. Here is how to tell them apart before you sign, in the operator's own vocabulary.
The two products
Best-effort fibre is consumer fibre with a business SLA and static-IP options: fast, affordable, and subject to evening congestion like any shared line. Committed bandwidth is a dedicated circuit - symmetric, guaranteed, priced several times higher, with contractual repair-time commitments. Neither is the wrong product; buying one while believing you bought the other is the wrong outcome.
The four questions that identify what you are buying
- "Is the bandwidth committed in the contract?" If the word "committed" is not in the contract with a number, it is best-effort.
- "Symmetric or asymmetric?" Dedicated circuits are usually symmetric; best-effort is asymmetric.
- "What is the repair commitment, in hours, in writing?" Best-effort gets a best-effort answer. A real committed product names restoration hours.
- "What happens at 8pm?" Ask directly about evening congestion. The answer's honesty tells you the product.
Match the product to the workload
VoIP-heavy teams need the repair SLA more than the headline speed: a dead line is worse than a slow one. Upload-heavy teams (backups, video publishing) need symmetry. Everything else - browsing, email, POS systems with 4G backup - runs fine on best-effort fibre with a sensible fallback. Our business internet guide walks through the matching process tier by tier.
Compare cost per guaranteed megabit, not headline megabit
A 500 Mbps best-effort line that slows at peak is not the same product as a 100 Mbps committed circuit, and the second is usually the better buy for anyone whose revenue depends on the connection. The business plans comparison keeps current published tiers side by side with the full-contract figures.
